The addition features a large weight training room with plenty of daylight, an overlooking cardio mezzanine, and a fencing gym that is home to the Academy’s highly-competitive NCAA Division 1 program.  The Air Force Academy campus is a designated National Historic Landmark District, and the Fitness Center Addition seamlessly blends with the existing design aesthetic.

Designed by Hastings+Chivetta, the Student Recreation Center at Columbus State has achieved the goals outlined by Columbus State – there are significant increases in daily use, available fitness classes, and participation in indoor intramural sports.

Funded by the students, the new center is a focal point for fitness and social life on campus.

Amenities in the renovated and expanded Recreation Center include multi-activity courts, extensive cardio space, racquetball courts, multipurpose rooms and a 28-foot climbing wall.  The Discovery Outdoors Center has new storage space for all of their gear, as well as new reception area and meeting rooms.

Hastings+Chivetta worked in association with Bowman Murray Hemingway Architects, and the contractor was J.M. Thompson Company.

The new center will have three pools, five multipurpose courts, fitness/cardio studios and climbing walls.  The new center is also designed to offer students another venue for studying between classes or grabbing a snack at the café.

Currently in the early planning stages, we are working with MICDS to develop a state-of-the-art natatorium that will meet the school’s current and future needs.  This project is being funded by the $65 million MICDS capital campaign, which has raised $47.7 million to date.

Due to be completed this spring, the science program at SIUE will no longer be inhibited by a lack of undergraduate lab space.  As the science building architects, Hastings+Chivetta incorporated new labs for chemistry, biology and environmental sciences, including undergraduate research labs.  Interaction and collaboration are key focus areas for the new facility, with ample space designed for faculty and students to engage one another.  Thanks to the transparent design of the new lobby, study and conference rooms will be highly visible to passersby, reinforcing the desire for the science program to be a more prominent campus presence.

When the new science building is complete, renovations to the existing 1966 facility will begin.  Labs and offices for the physics, math and statistics departments will be state-of-the-art, and comparable to those in the new facility.

The new Science Building is on target to achieve LEED Silver certification.

Connecting paths from the the townhouse-style residences lead to a central commons that features a large community room with multiple seating groups, a large fireplace and amenities including a full-service kitchen and large laundry.  The commons also features an outdoor colonnaded porch, and an adjacent landscaped quad with a multi-level courtyard and fire pit.

Sustainable design features that contributed to the Silver certification include the use of geothermal energy, energy automation and monitoring, and extensive use of recycled construction materials, including paving a new parking lot with the ground-up surface from a previous lot.

Hastings+Chivetta has worked with Centre College for the past ten years to help them achieve their sustainability goals on multiple projects including, the LEED Gold Young Hall Science Center and Pearl Residence Hall, and the LEED Silver Campus Center.

While sports enthusiasts across the nation are just now becoming acquainted with FGCU, Hastings+Chivetta’s relationship with the university dates back to the early 2000′s when H+C was selected to complete an athletic facilities master plan and design for a performance arena – now known as Alico Arena, the home of the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles!
