The George S. Eccles Student Life Center at the University of Utah, designed by Hastings+Chivetta in association with MHTN Architects, has received an Athletic Business Facilities of Merit Award. The award judges were impressed with the scope and presentation of the project, with one judge noting “careful management and unification of program elements with exterior massing and rhythmic façade glazing.”

The Student Life Center, completed in September 2014, encompasses 185,000 SF and is a hub of social and recreational activity on campus. The building design was inspired by its surrounding desert. “Rugged from floor plan to exterior to interior,” stated one judge. “Mission accomplished.”

Components of the facility include a natatorium, 17,000 SF two-level fitness center, three-court gym with suspended track, bouldering wall, climbing wall, racquetball courts and group fitness studios. “Cohesive, integrated exterior and interior design appropriate to the site,” remarked another judge.
