Temple University

Pearson and McGonigle Halls | Addition and Renovation

Founded in 1884, Temple University is one of the nation’s major centers of teaching, research and service yet is the only state-related college in the City of Philadelphia. Hastings+Chivetta was asked by H2L2 to join their team to renovate two of Temple's adjacent – and partially adjoining – athletic and HPER facilities, Pearson Hall and McGonigle Hall.

Hastings+Chivetta designed a unique building solution: constructing a 70,000 SF third level across the top of the two buildings. A new two-story atrium with reconfigured entries closes in the buildings on the lower floors and includes a control desk for access to the athletic and recreation components on the third floor. The addition provides separate men’s and women’s practice courts for the varsity basketball teams as well as a four-court recreation gym and three multipurpose rooms. Amenities also on this level include training room, laundry, locker rooms, storage, and administrative suites for the Recreation Department and Athletic Department including coaches’ offices.

Existing facilities in both buildings will be renovated including the pool, cardio/weights fitness center, racquetball courts and climbing wall. Approximately 10,000 SF of the ground level will be reconfigured into retail and foodservice space along with renovated offices and a new lecture hall with seating for 100.
