| Founded in 1905 and located in Rome, Georgia, the Darlington School is an independent, coeducational college preparatory school for boarding students. The design of the A.J. Huffman Memorial Athletic Complex was the outcome of a comprehensive master planning effort by Hastings & Chivetta that also included a new middle school and performing arts center. Hastings & Chivetta was asked to design a facility that appealed to the entire Darlington student body by enhancing opportunities for education, wellness, recreation, and athletics. In addition, assembly uses for convocation and commencement were also addressed to maximize the flexibility of the space. The 100,000 SF, two-level facility is comprised of approximately 15,000 SF of renovated space and 85,000 SF of new construction. The main entrance functions as a daily student drop-off/pick-up point as well as the main public access during events. Additional entrance points to the building provide access to outdoor athletic fields and a pedestrian underpass that is linked to the main campus. The facility includes a renovated competition pool, 1,200-seat performance arena, three-court multipurpose gymnasium, fitness center/weight room, three-mat wrestling room, aerobics room, athletic offices, training room, and hospitality room that overlooks the performance gymnasium and football field. |
