Founded in 1885, Rollins College is the oldest recognized college in Florida. With a growing interest in athletics, recreation, and fitness among students, the existing Warden Arena did not meet the needs of the college. To accommodate Rollins’ increased number of athletic, physical education, and recreation programs, Hastings+Chivetta designed a facility that would support the healthy lifestyles of students and faculty and provide venues for sporting events, convocations, concerts, and a variety of campus events.
The exterior of the Harold & Ted Alfond Sports Center has been designed to complement the existing campus’ Mediterranean style of architecture, consisting of traditional materials such as stucco, limestone, red tile, and architectural elements including gable roofs, deep overhangs, and arcades.
Renovation of the 34,000 SF existing facility included the 2,000-seat performance gymnasium and locker rooms; the main lobby and concession area were also renovated and enlarged. An auxiliary gymnasium, a fitness center, an athletic training facility, a multipurpose room, a hall of fame room, a laboratory/classroom, and offices make up the 41,000 SF expansion.
