Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center

Illinois College administrators asked Hastings+Chivetta to design the Bruner Fitness and Recreation facility. A challenge was locating the 150,000 SF facility on the college’s small campus. The site places it efficiently on a street corner between the existing football field and baseball stadium, creating the Sports Mall, a raised spectator plaza behind the bleachers that has become an exciting gathering place for the campus.

The main entrance features an indoor concourse with restrooms, concessions and a dining bar overlooking the fields. This concourse leads to the Sports Mall as well as into the 1,600-seat Sherman Gymnasium — the performance arena. Other recreation components in the three-level facility include a field house with three multipurpose courts inside a 200-meter track; an eight-lane competition pool accompanied by a sauna, a steam room and 30-seat hot tub; two racquetball courts; a multipurpose room; and a weight and cardiovascular fitness center.

Other spaces include a wellness center, a catering kitchen, classrooms, a computer lab, locker rooms, a training room, office suites, a hall of fame and a reception area.
