As a new private, Catholic, coeducational high school with single-gender classes, Barat Academy is located within a community of homes, offices and retail establishments — all linked by a green belt. This location mandated a unique design concept that would enable Barat to function as a community that supports lifelong learning between the school and the surrounding area.
Academy leaders commissioned Hastings+Chivetta to design the concept. Barat Academy will be built in five phases. Phases I, II and III were completed in time for the 2007-2008 school year. These phases included sitework and the Founders Building — the main academic hall which contains classrooms, science labs with prep rooms, a library with a high-tech media center, breakouts rooms, offices, a bookstore, the IT department, a large lobby and a chapel.
Phase IV will consist of a food service and dining building, and Phase V will be for the fine arts and physical education programs. Fine arts studios will include space for orchestra, band, chorus, ceramics, painting and graphic arts. The physical education program will receive a performance gym with seating for 750 spectators. Below the gym will be separate boys’ and girls’ state-of-the-art weight/fitness centers and locker rooms, a classroom, storage and PE offices.
