Capital University built a modern recreation center to replace its outdated 1930s facilities. The Capital Center has enhanced the university’s student recruitment efforts and quickly become an integral part of university life.
The new center has vastly improved Capital’s facilities for health and wellness activities, academic programs, intercollegiate athletics, intramural sports, social activities, and community partnerships.
“People come in for tours and are flabbergasted by the size and quality of it,” said Capital University’s athletic director in Columbus Business First. “It blends recruiting, academics, athletics, health, and fitness.”
The stadium’s grass-like, durable AstroPlay turf allows the university to use the field for all types of events. A recreational running track encircles the field. Hospital suites and balconies allow the university to host VIPs. A skylit atrium connects the stadium and arena.
The center fits with Capital’s other campus architecture. Hastings+Chivetta’s design complements existing buildings by using red brick, a pitched roof, and exterior arches. Tall windows draw in natural daylight.
The Capital Center integrates into one unified facility:
- A 2,500-seat football and soccer stadium
- A 2,100-seat performance arena for Capital’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling programs
- A 56,000 SF multipurpose recreation center with a 200-meter indoor track; four courts; weight training, cardiovascular, and aerobics areas; and multipurpose rooms
- Athletic department offices
