For several years, the leaders of the City of Sunset Hills had been contemplating constructing a new community recreation complex. Officials selected Hastings+Chivetta to provide a feasibility study and program for a new Community Center and Outdoor Pool.
Hastings+Chivetta asked marketing consultant Ballard*King and aquatics consultant Counsilman-Hunsaker to join the study team. Services by the team included analysis of market conditions, evaluation of several sites, needs analysis, operations analysis, program development and total project cost models.
Each site was assessed for the planned center and outdoor pool as well as a future indoor pool addition.
The preferred site is adjacent to City Hall with an existing wooded barrier that conceals surrounding neighborhoods. The building organization takes advantage of the sloping site with an upper-level entry. The Center is visually open with connected spaces that promote a sense of community.
Recreation components for the two-level facility include a gymnasium, a cardio fitness/weights center and multipurpose rooms. The outdoor pool includes a leisure pool, an eight-lane competition pool with diving and support spaces. Other amenities include a large lobby, locker rooms, public meeting rooms with catering kitchen and administrative office suites.
