This 82,000 SF recreation facility, designed by Hastings+Chivetta, is primarily programmed as a community recreation complex, however, both ice time and natatorium time are available on a lease contract basis.
The ice arena includes team change areas and seating for 1,000 spectators. It can be used as a special events space for conferences, shows, and exhibits. The natatorium contains a 50-meter, ten-lane pool with two movable bulkheads, a a three-meter diving platform and two one-meter boards. An indoor wading pool and a therapy pool are also included.
The main lobby includes a skater’s warming room, a lounge, food service, and a central control desk. The facility has meeting rooms and fitness rooms and the entire complex is handicapped accessible.
Through the employment of energy conservation measures, load systems, variable flow hydronic systems, multiple use of ventilation air, variable air volume air conditioning systems, air-to-air heat recovery, heat pumps, and a liquid overfeed refrigeration system for the ice rink, an energy utilization of 175,000 BTU per square foot per year was obtained, comparable with a normal 315,000 BTU per square foot per year budget for similar athletic facilities. As a result, this project was awarded the 1986 Engineering Excellence Honor Award by the Consulting Engineers Council of Missouri.
