The College School

Multi-Purpose Theater Concept Design

The College School is a unique, private, PreK-8 school that emphasizes an adventurous, theme-based, experiential curriculum. Hastings+Chivetta was originally retained to provide a comprehensive master plan and has since been asked to design several of the plan’s phases.

One of the phases involved the renovation and expansion of the multi-purpose theater space. The space, which had not had any major renovations since it was constructed around 1940 as a gymnasium and theater, was in need of substantial improvement.

Hastings+Chivetta’s design solution included a complete upgrade of the finishes, exposing the existing brick on the walls as well as the heavy timber roof deck on steel roof structure. Acoustical treatment along with high-quality sound and lighting systems create a significantly enhanced theater environment.

An addition provides increased storage space and a glass-enclosed climbing wall, aligned with an expansive glass opening at the corridor entrance, creating a strong visual link from the building’s exterior into the climbing wall. Motorized window shades control light during theatrical productions.

To improve theatergoer experience, a new glass entry vestibule creates a separate public entrance that directly connects to the parking area. The resulting space is highly flexible with a distinguished identity that enhances a wide range of activities.
