Barat Academy leaders wanted a unique site in order to create a highly motivating campus that would support lifelong learning and service. The location is adjacent to a 173-acre park, the Barat Haven community, and sits across from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. Hastings+Chivetta was commissioned to design a school that would enhance the neighborhood components while advancing nearby educational opportunities.
After a careful master plan, the first phase was completed by the fall of 2007, in time to educate the founding freshmen class of 82 students, with other phases to accommodate additional classes. The school will eventually hold 600 students in grades 9-12.
The two-floor, 70,000 SF Founders Building is the main academic hall and consists of a large lobby and chapel; 60 classrooms; eight science laboratories with two prep rooms; administration and development office; a bookstore; a library with a high-tech media center; the IT department; and eight breakout study rooms.
Remaining phases include a food service and dining building and a fine arts and physical education center. Art studios will include spaces for orchestra, band, chorus, ceramics, painting and graphic arts. The PE department will have a performance gym with seating for 750 spectators, faculty offices, a classroom, storage and weight/fitness centers and locker rooms.
The design-build project with Paric Construction will be fully completed in 2010.
