Peoria Park District, IL

Peoria Riverplex

The Peoria RiverPlex is jointly owned by the Peoria Park District and OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. The challenge was to design a facility that would serve the needs of both. Hastings+Chivetta’s solution incorporated the Peoria Riverfront Business District’s master plan of recreation, tourism, cultural and commercial activities for revitalizing the city’s riverfront, while meeting both owners’ needs.

The narrow site anchors a scenic parkway along the Illinois River. Hastings+Chivetta’s plan for a long, linear facility raises the site above the flood plain. The oversized brick is consistent with the mass of the long building and relates to the masonry facilities along the riverfront. The exterior features corrugated and smooth insulated metal panels. The metal roof gives the facility a strong presence and stands out on the riverfront.

The Center’s two-level linear wings are connected by an open lobby with a large skylight. Recreation activities include an indoor water park with four pools, a three-court arena with an elevated track, a multipurpose gymnasium, a fitness/weight center, an exercise room and the XRGame Zone. Social and wellness amenities include classrooms with a demonstration kitchen; a restaurant and food court; a childcare center; and a pro shop. The hospital also operates a 7,000 SF space for rehabilitation and clinical programs.
