Leaders of Mission, Kansas, envisioned the Powell Community Center as a comprehensive and affordable community recreation center.
Hastings+Chivetta’s first assignment was to identify the service area for the community center, study the area’s demographics, conduct a market analysis, and determine the level of participation the center might experience. The firm studied a variety of building spaces and developed a program to balance the facility’s components with user expectations.
Site analysis tested the building location to maximize visual impact, parking, vehicular circulation, and preservation of the site’s natural features, while the interior was planned and designed for maximum marketability, ease of operation, expandability, and user excitement. The new two-level center includes a lounge, a game room, meeting rooms, aerobic and weight training rooms, a gymnasium, and a natatorium.
A highlight is the natatorium, which includes a three-lane lap pool and a leisure pool with a corkscrew slide, whirlpool, sauna, and steam room.
The design is in the Mission Revival style of architecture.
