The University of Central Florida’s existing Recreation and Wellness Center opened in 2002 and was immediately heavily utilized. In less than six years, at just over 84,000 SF, the RWC was already too small for the growing interest in healthy lifestyles among the campus community.
Hastings+Chivetta served as programmer and Design Architect, in collaboration with Borrelli & Partners as Architect of Record, to design the RWC expansion. Completed in phases, the facility includes cardio fitness and weight training space, multi-activity courts, multipurpose rooms, racquetball courts, retail and food services, office space and a laundry room.
A new outdoor 25-yard by 25-meter pool accompanies the existing outdoor leisure pool.
Outdoor recreational activities are supported by the new Outdoor Adventure Center with meeting rooms, equipment rental and oversized storage space.
The original RWC was relocated into the expansion and designed for full services including assessment and examination rooms, a laboratory, consultation rooms, offices and reception.
A 100,000 SF satellite RWC is also planned.
