College of William and Mary

Recreation Center

Designated as LEED™ Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, this new Recreation Center for the College of William & Mary provides a renovation and addition to the original building. Hastings+Chivetta guided the project through sustainable design principles to obtain this status of high performance and energy efficiency.

The addition was blended to the existing structure through architectural complements as well as a new shingled roof over the entire building. The entire facility was opened up with skylights and large windows that flood the interior with natural daylight.

The lobby was created to be a “Main Street” with new skylights, comfortable seating, contemporary lighting fixtures, and a variety of finishes including exposed concrete masonry and brick. A highlight is the college’s seal laid in the terrazzo floor near the entrance. Full height tempered glass walls were added to the existing handball/racquetball courts, along with new floors and ceilings.

The design allows the new multi-activity court to be placed on the lower level so that staff can oversee all activities. The location also allowed space for a new double-level climbing wall which can be seen from the lobby through a large glass façade. The site gave extra square footage for fitness activities as well as a new massage room.

Renovations included upgrading the gymnasium and racquetball/squash courts; new lighting and spectator seating in the natatorium; and expanding the areas for cardio equipment, free weights, and multipurpose rooms. Power and data ports were added in the cardio area for equipment that has built-in computers.
