Indiana State University asked Hastings+Chivetta to program, master plan and design the Student Recreation Center. The firm then assisted ISU in successfully passing a referendum that increased student fees specifically for the construction and maintenance of the new center.
The exterior respects the existing campus context in regard to material and scale. The site was chosen to reinforce and respond to established circulation patterns.
The facility has two primary entrances, one towards campus and one facing student parking. From either entry, all major activities can be seen, creating an immediate visual impact that promotes wellness and fitness.
Recreation components include a three-court gymnasium with an elevated track, a multi-activity court with team boxes and spectator seating, a fitness center with weight training and cardio equipment, a climbing wall, and a spinning studio. A sun deck is on the south side of the building and a sand volleyball court is on the west side. An aquatics center offers a lap pool, leisure pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, wet classroom and access to the sundeck.
Off the spacious lobby is a student lounge with games and a snack bar. Support spaces include locker rooms, an athletic training room, a wellness assessment suite, meeting rooms, laundry, offices and storage.
