Hastings+Chivetta was commissioned to complete a Recreation Facilities Master Plan at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey. The existing structures consisted of two main buildings, the College Avenue Gymnasium and Werblin Recreation Center, as well as several smaller buildings that supported the recreation department, including a boathouse, a fields support building, a tennis center and a fitness center. Outdoor facilities included tennis courts, a multi-activity court/rink, basketball courts, a ropes course and a pool.
Activities began with overall assessment, inspections of existing facilities and review of owner-provided background data. The process was highly interactive and involved numerous interviews with key stakeholder groups — including students. Adjacency requirements and site selection issues were taken into consideration.
All information was used to shape project concepts, and a strategy for the Master Plan improvements was developed. Hastings+Chivetta was asked to provide conceptual designs for a new three-level Recreation Center, and a detailed program statement with cost information was included in the professional services for the proposed facility improvements.
