Recreation & Wellness Center

Arkansas State University’s Health, Physical Education and Sports Sciences Complex was over thirty years old and originally built for academics. The Fitness Club, located in the Student Union, was not large enough for ASU’s growing student population. In an effort to provide better fitness and health facilities, administrative and student leaders created the Department of Wellness & Health Promotion, then joined together to promote the construction of the new Recreation & Wellness Center.

Hastings+Chivetta, in collaboration with local associate Brackett Krennerich Architects, was commissioned to program and design the new facility.

The two-level facility has a three-court gymnasium, encircled by a three-lane suspended track, and a separate multi-activity court. Other components are weight training and fitness space; a multipurpose studio for dance, aerobics and spinning; locker rooms, equipment issue/laundry room and meeting rooms. The lobby has a juice bar and student lounge, as well as access to an administrative office suite and the Wellness Assessment Center.

ASU and the City of Jonesboro envision a joint venture indoor/outdoor aquatics facility for a second phase.
