In August 2009, Morehead State University (MSU) broke ground on the construction of a new Campus Recreation Center designed by Hastings+Chivetta. Prior to the design of the new Center, MSU requested that H+C perform a master plan study of future building placement and circulation near the new Center. In addition, MSU contracted H+C to study the placement of a new 400-bed residence hall and a 400-car parking garage proposed in 2006.
The new residential life study is viewed as an extension of the prior plan in that it tests the 2006 concept for single-person bedrooms in community-style suites preferred by students. During the study, H+C proposed a mix of two- and four-person suites to offer increased residence options. MSU participants concluded that the scale of a single 400-bed building would not fit into the surrounding campus context. It was decided that two smaller scale buildings would be more appropriate for the selected site.
The study also examines the placement of a 400-car parking garage with 24,000 SF of retail and dining space on the ground level. This garage facility is intended to support several nearby residential halls.
