Robertson Recreational Activities Center

To carry on Southwestern University’s “Vision 2000” campaign, Hastings+Chivetta was hired to design an addition to and renovation of the existing Sid Richardson Athletic Center, creating the Corbin J. Robertson Recreational Activities Center.

Built in 1970, the Sid Richardson Center was clearly outdated in size and quality of activity spaces.  Both the Division III Varsity Athletic Programs and the needs of recreation and intramural play had significantly outgrown the original building’s one-court performance gymnasium. The existing facility also lacked any dedicated weight room, fitness area, and multipurpose rooms.

The renovated existing facility includes a performance gymnasium, classroom areas, corridor systems, and a natatorium. The old performance gymnasium was converted to a two-court recreational gymnasium. In addition, a state-of-the-art training area and sports medicine laboratory were developed and a weight room, aerobics room, and jogging track were incorporated.

The office component includes offices for the athletic, recreation, and intramural department, as well as offices for the campus wellness and counseling department.
