Berea College

Seabury Convocation & Recreation Center

As college enrollment swelled to over 1,500, Berea College’s Seabury Gymnasium began to show the signs of wear common to an over-utilized facility. Hastings+Chivetta’s challenge was to design an appropriately sized sports center that incorporated Seabury Gymnasium, a building with architectural significance for Berea’s campus.

The existing Seabury Gymnasium serves as the anchor for the new Seabury Convocation & Recreation Center while remaining a recognizable campus landmark.

The Seabury Convocation & Recreation Center has a new multipurpose gymnasium that provides space for convocations as well as athletic activities. The center has fixed and retractable seating, a retractable stage and theatrical lighting. Acoustics were designed to provide ample reverberation for musical performances and enough amplification to permit the voice of a single speaker to reach the entire forum.

A six-lane, 25-yard pool is housed in the new natatorium, while the lower level of the existing gymnasium was renovated to provide support facilities, classrooms and a weight room.
