Set on a 228-acre park-like campus, California State University, Stanislaus is part of the 23-campus California State University system. With enrollment expected to double by 2027, the university is making plans to accommodate the rapid growth. To provide programming, planning and conceptual design services for an addition to its Student Recreation Center, the university has enlisted Hastings+Chivetta.
Through on-campus, interactive workshops facilitated by Hastings+Chivetta, the university was guided through a personalized process which organized thought, created a vision, built stakeholder consensus and developed and executed a plan, including student referendum strategies.
The addition concept designs speak to the University’s goals, providing more space for a wide variety of fitness and wellness activities and programs. Fitness zones feature specific spaces for machine weights, cardiovascular training, functional circuit weights, stretching and floor work. The three-court gym can be used for numerous sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton and floor hockey. A three-lane indoor exercise track, three racquetball courts and a golf simulator with putting surface are also new amenities. Movement rooms for group fitness/aerobics, a demonstration kitchen/break room and a wellness suite round out the wellness features of the facility.
The administrative offices were expanded to meet the university’s programing needs. The new lobby is equipped with a secure entry area as well as a juice bar. The lounge will offer comfortable seating for meeting friends, studying and people watching.
Careful planning by the design team ensured that the new two-story addition will harmonize with the existing recreation center, be skillfully integrated into the surrounding maturing landscape of the campus and complement other campus facilities. The design is accessible, adaptable, and simultaneously, unobtrusive. Large windows offer ample natural sunlight into the space which will energize and invigorate students.
