Case Western Reserve University

Veale Convocation and Recreation Center

Involvement with NCAA Division III required Case Western Reserve University to expand its existing recreational facilities.

The Veale Convocation and Recreation Center accommodates over 6,000 people for campus and community exhibitions and events. Hastings+Chivetta’s design supports athletics, recreation, and indoor commencement exercises, which had historically been conducted outside.

The Center’s visual orientation and axial approach to campus facilitates pedestrian and vehicular access. Linking the existing and new buildings is a dramatic skylit two-story atrium, housing the university’s athletic hall of fame.

Housed in the Center are a lobby, two multipurpose rooms for physical education and wellness programs, faculty offices, conference rooms, a training room, and four full-sized courts. The six-lane, 200-meter track surrounding the courts is used for intercollegiate competition.
