Concept 1 & 2 - Square for Website

Hastings+Chivetta’s summer interns, Cameron Strickland (Kansas State University), Ed Falkowski (Washington University), Tom Florent (University of Kansas) and Sarvagya Bhargava (University of Kansas), have completed their pro bono architectural project for Open Door Animal Sanctuary’s Reaching New Heights campaign, a fundraising campaign to allow the shelter to replace and renovate their existing facility. The campaign includes building a new annex building to house an adoption space, veterinary clinic, offices and a meeting/training room.

Under the guidance of Hastings+Chivetta’s Intern Advisory Committee – Project Architect Chris Rollhaus, Sustainability Facilitator Leslie Garner and Junior Architectural Designer Preston Scott, the interns brainstormed and created exterior and interior renderings and floor plans for the new space.

The staff at Open Door will showcase the design when fundraising for the Capital Campaign.

The interns all agreed that participating in this project was an invaluable opportunity to gain real-world architectural experience and collaborate in a team setting.

Located in House Springs, Open Door Animal Sanctuary is the largest no kill animal shelter in the state of Missouri and four surrounding states. They provide a home to more than 400 cats and dogs. Their mission is to provide these animals with the highest quality of life and a second chance to find a forever home. Since its founding in 1975, Open Door has helped more than 100,000 cats and dogs.
