Grand Opening of ICCU Arena Energizes University of Idaho Campus

Monday, October 11, 2021

Hastings+Chivetta, along with our architectural partner Opsis Architecture, is pleased to announce that the Idaho Central Credit Union Arena is officially open to the University of Idaho campus and surrounding community.  The state-of-the-art, 66,100 square foot, 4,000 seat Idaho Central Credit Union Arena was unveiled in a community celebration that occurred on Friday, October 8, 2021.

The new Idaho Central Credit Union Arena will serve as the home for Vandal men’s and women’s basketball as well as a gathering place for a variety of events to enhance student life including special concerts, academic conferences and other student events.  The new venue aims to rally fan excitement, strengthen recruiting, and place the University’s athletic facilities on par with other Division I universities.  The Arena is truly a showpiece for the University of Idaho community, telling the story of Idaho’s heritage and providing a unique gathering place for generations of Vandals to come.

The Arena is the first signature wood facility of its size in the state.  The University of Idaho  received a highly-competitive Wood Innovation Grant to make timber and mass timber construction a focal point of the project.  As such, the venue pays homage to the beauty of Idaho and its natural resources.  The project has already brought significant economic benefit to the region with locally-sourced timber and building materials.  Students in architecture, civil engineering, soils, and more have been involved throughout the construction process, gaining hands-on experience and educational opportunities.

The Idaho Central Credit Union Arena also embodies a significant commitment to sustainable design with preserved elements from the old Kibbie Dome.  The Idaho Administration Club Basketball Center entrance features the transplanted center court logo transplanted from the old floor.  Other pieces of the Spectrum can be found in places such as the ceiling of the men’s locker room.  These thoughtful touches preserve elements of the warmth and vision of the previous venue as the University of Idaho basketball program moves to its new, state-of-the-art home.
