Hastings+Chivetta, in collaboration with BatesForum, Fox Architects, and JEMA, organized CANstruction’s 2019 competition that took place June 22nd at the Saint Louis Science Center. Nine teams participated in this year’s event, which raised 25,550 pounds of food for Operation Food Search, valued at $42,621.80. Over the week that the canned food structures were on display, 51,363 St. Louisans visited the Science Center to appreciate the participants’ creations. The H+C team’s 3,720-can structure of a flower, bee, and picnic blanket complete with ants won an award for Best use of Labels.

CANstruction is a design competition that brings together local architects, designers, engineers, contractors, and students to fight hunger. Participants build structures out of canned goods in 10’x10’ spaces, and attendees vote for their favorite structures by donating pennies at the corresponding structure. After the competition, all the money donated and cans used to create the structures are donated to Operation Food Search. This year’s CANstruction theme was Pollinator Week to bring awareness to the importance of pollinators to our everyday lives, and other structures featured included Winnie-the-Pooh, Butterfree, and Mr. Potato Head.
