Centre College Receives $250M Gift from Brockman Commons Donor

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Centre College, a long-time client of Hastings+Chivetta Architects, has received a $250 million donation from the A. Eugene Brockman Charitable Trust – the largest gift ever to a liberal arts college, and one of the top 20 largest gifts to any college or university in the United States.

The donation creates the Brockman Scholars Program in Leadership and Entrepreneurship. Starting in the fall of 2014, 40 new scholars will be awarded the full-ride-plus package each year. The merit-based scholarship program will support students majoring in the natural sciences, the computational sciences, and economics.

Centre’s newly completed A. Eugene Brockman Residential Commons, designed by Hastings+Chivetta Architects, was also funded by the Brockman Charitable Trust. The $14 million project has achieved LEED Silver certification.

Hastings+Chivetta has an eleven-year working relationship with Centre. Beginning with a campus master plan in 2002, the firm has since designed six building projects, including Sutcliffe Athletic Center, Crounse Academic Center and Young Hall Science Center, for a total of over $75 million.
