The existing athletic complex at Roanoke College is comprised of three connected buildings originally constructed in 1930, with additions in 1982 and 1998. The facility has multiple levels and entry points in a maze of corridors, making security, control and circulation difficult. The complex also no longer meets the needs of increasing enrollment, so the college commissioned Hastings+Chivetta to complete an Athletic and Recreation Facilities Master Plan.
Services also included programming and conceptual design. The firm examined and evaluated existing facilities and documents, then held on-campus design workshops with various groups of college stakeholders.
New athletic and recreation components include a 200-meter fieldhouse; a two-court performance gymnasium with 2,500 spectator seats; a fitness and free weight room; multipurpose rooms; an athletic training area and locker rooms. The Department of Health & Human Performance will have classrooms, laboratories and an office suite with rooms for video editing and marketing production.
Other amenities include a hall of fame/alumni room, meeting rooms, a catering kitchen, a lobby, a juice bar and laundry. The existing swimming pool, gym, locker rooms and other support spaces will receive upgraded finishes, lighting and mechanical systems.
