Student Recreation Building

Morehead State University retained Hastings+Chivetta to complete a planning study for a new recreation center. A campus-wide survey was conducted to assess the current and potential use of recreation, wellness and fitness facilities.

The new Student Recreation Center is a visual symbol of MSU’s expanding campus. The architecture weaves into the fabric of surrounding buildings and reflects the façade of the Space Science Building, also designed by Hastings+Chivetta.

The extensive use of glass allows natural light to filter into the building. The use of precast concrete was selected for its economics, as well as its strong, contemporary appearance.

The main entry opens into a large lobby with access to the recreation office suite. After entering through control, to the left is a three-court recreation gym with an elevated track, to the right is the natatorium with an outdoor sun deck, and straight ahead is a large fitness center with cardio and weight machines.

Other components on the main level include racquetball courts and locker rooms. The upstairs contains natatorium observation, multipurpose rooms, a wellness lab, access to the track and cardio balcony, a lounge and a game room. A recreation field is planned for the front of the building.

The recreation center is LEED Gold certified.
