A joint venture of Southeast Missouri State University and the City of Cape Girardeau, Hastings+Chivetta planned the Show Me Center to accommodate a wide range of activities for SEMO and the community.
The program included two major spaces: a 7,000-seat arena and a recreation center. The design has separate entrances to maximize flexibility and minimize disruptions when the two spaces are being used simultaneously.
The arena is acoustically sound to accommodate athletic competitions as well as events such as concerts, conventions and speakers.
The adjacent Student Recreation Center houses the athletic practice facilities. The Center has five full basketball courts (including two hard wood courts), a large weight room, six racquetball courts, an indoor track, two cardiovascular equipment areas, a climbing wall, multipurpose rooms and locker rooms.
The new Student Aquatic Center, which opened in December 2007 and was also designed by Hastings+Chivetta, features a four-lane lap pool, a recreational pool with a rock wall and a zip line, a hot tub, and locker rooms.
