Weary Center for Fitness & Health

Hastings+Chivetta designed the 81,300 SF Weary Center for Fitness & Health as an attachment to the existing Knight Fieldhouse for maximum efficiency, convenience, and centralized control of the facility.

Features of the Weary Center for Fitness & Health are a 2,550-seat performance court, a training room, a free-weight room, racquetball courts, and cardiovascular/exercise areas. The two-story west wing contains department offices, a hall of fame, a multipurpose classroom, a wellness and exercise laboratory, a specialty instruction area, a resource room, and a batting cage.

The single-story west portion of the Knight Fieldhouse was renovated to correct structural and mechanical deficiencies. Locker rooms, an aerobics area, a track observation seating and assembly area, and pool and fieldhouse storage replaced the existing functions. The location of a new natatorium was chosen to take advantage of the southern exposure.

The design connects the outdoor courts and fields to the gymnasium, forming a quadrangle that strengthens all athletic and recreation programs, while also creating new open green space for outdoor intramurals.
